(ABC 6 News) -- Tom Hall was one of many in attendance Saturday for  the “Boost Your Energy IQ” event at Cascade Meadow Wetlands and Environmental Science Center in Rochester. Hall says he's already taken steps toward making his home more energy efficient.

"We put a blanket upstairs in the attic, so to speak," said Hall.

Hall added insulation to his home, and replaced his vintage windows to ones that are more energy efficient.

"We’ve cut down on drafts, which would be an energy loss," said Hall.

Terry Webster with the Minnesota Department of Commerce Division of Energy Resources says people can save money on energy by knowing more about how their home operates, which he says that starts by getting an advanced energy audit.

"Once you have that information then it's much easier to go out and decide, you know what, i really have to add insulation or i need a new refrigerator or better windows is a good idea, but without that information it's really hard for most of us to know how our house operates," said Webster.

Where can people start conserving energy in their homes?

"Anything from adding insulation or air ceiling to buying efficient appliances or furnaces and water heaters, or put in solar panels on their roof or in their yard," said Webster.

Webster says energy not used is money in our pockets for other things.

"May we have a moment of silence for the incandescent bulb? It's going away," said Hall.

As people gain more knowledge, more homes will be energy efficient like Tom Hall’s.

"Boost Your Energy IQ" helped participants learn more about energy efficiency.
