(ABC 6 News) -- This propane crisis is hitting the region at the same we are experiencing the coldest winter in thirty years.
Officials are not expecting it to end any time soon.
As we have reported, Governor Mark Dayton has given a 30-day extension to an emergency declaration.
Minnesota is also prepared to open warming shelters if cold weather continues, as a place for people to go if they run out of fuel for their homes.
According to Governor Dayton, "The situation is very, very serious and critical for some. Just the anxiety of being in a cold weather state and know the cold spell is supposed to last and not having the usual resources you need to keep alive is a very frightening experience."
The State of Emergency Operations Center has extended the hours of their propane hotline. They are open this weekend between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm. Their number is 1-800-657-3504. Operators can help callers find help paying for propane, through the state's assistance program and the help of non-profit organizations.
