UPDATE: Police Exchanged Gunfire with Standoff Suspect, Scene Opens

10:30 Update:  The Worth County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the suspect in the standoff is 21-year-old Matthew Davis.  They say he was taken to Mercy Hospital North Iowa for self-inflicted knife wounds, but released.  He is currently being held at Worth County Jail on attempted murder charges.


6:15pm Update:  Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau says the standoff began with a medical call.  At one point the suspect inside the home fired at police, but no one was injured.  A 20-year-old was taken out of the home and is in police custody.


5:40 Update: The road that was once blocked is now reopened.  Police remain at the scene, but have allowed our crew to gain access.  We are now working to speak with Sheriff Jay Langenbau about what exactly took place this afternoon.


4:15pm Update: The Iowa State Patrol has confirmed to ABC 6 News that they have exchanged gunfire with a standoff suspect near Lake Mills, IA.

The suspect remains hold up inside a home off of highway 105.


(ABC 6 NEWS) -- We are working to learn more information about a police situation near Lake Mills, IA.

Worth County Deputies have blocked off traffic to an area off highway 105.  Our news crew was stopped nearly 3 miles outside of town.

When asked about why the road was blocked, deputies said it was in the interest of public safety.

We are working to confirm reports of a possible standoff.  At this hour the Worth County Sheriff's Office, and Iowa State Patrol did not have any information.

The city of Lake Mills has not been officially notified of the situation.
