(ABC 6 News) – A telephone scam in Rochester led to a man losing a lot of personal documents on his computer.
A 59-year-old Rochester man living at the 4000 block of 4th Place NW received a call from a man claiming to be with Microsoft. The caller said he was calling to let the “customer” know there was something wrong with his computer. He then convinced the man to log-on to his computer and instructed him to do several things.
At the end of the conversation, the caller said he’d fixed the problem and that the man now needed to give his credit card information for the service. When the man refused, the caller said he’d delete things off of the computer. Somehow, he hacked in and was able to delete all of the man’s pictures, address list, and other personal data.
This happened on Friday but the information was just released by Rochester Police Tuesday.
