There's already a buzz of excitement over the possibility of a new tenant in the old Sears space. Plans have been submitted to demolish and expand part of the space to put a Scheels store in its place.
“I'm excited I'm looking forward to more hockey equipment and biking and hiking equipment," said Rochester resident Jennifer Schubert.
Many have either been Scheels sporting goods store in Saint Cloud or Mankato or have heard about it.
"I've heard good things, that it's going to be a large store so a bigger selection," said Schubert.
"I have several friends that go to Scheels when they go to St. Cloud, and my son shops there a lot he's living in St. Cloud so he goes there quite often," said Tammy Wischielwski.
Plans submitted to the Rochester Planning and Zoning Committee show that the store would be 149,000 square feet making it larger than their other stores in the state. The plans also show that the parking and drives around the area of construction would need to be reconfigured.
It seems those excited by the prospect feel there is a need for the store in the area.
“I think there's a big community of sports and athletics here in Rochester and competition is always good to get a better selection a little higher end selection would be nice,” said Schubert.
The project is scheduled to be taken up at the February 12th planning and zoning committee meeting. The development also includes a nine thousand square foot restaurant building on the north side of the mall.
