(KSTP) - The St. Paul Fire Department and emergency crews responded early Sunday morning to an apartment fire on Glendale Street in St. Paul.  Fire officials have confirmed one person was killed in the fire.

It's unknown if other residents were injured.

Residents were evacuated just after 4 a.m. and a search and rescue was conducted in the two-story building. They have since been let back into their apartments; however, two residences have become uninhabitable following the blaze.

The apartment building was fully-engulfed and smoke was billowing out of the rooftop. The smell of smoke was even detected inside the 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS newsroom, nearly a mile away.

A cause has yet to be determined and an investigation is underway. This is the first fatal fire of 2014 in St. Paul.
