(ABC 6 News) -- For the first time, people got the chance to check out Olmsted Medical Center's Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance Facility. The open house was held today, where we got the inside scoop on what the new facility offers.
For Kevin Coyle and his son Jason, sports are a big part of their everyday life. “Hockey right now is the big focus, he actually has a game a 1 o’clock,” said Kevin Coyle of Rochester.
"Sports to me isn't just a hobby, it's more of a passion,” said Jason Coyle.
So the idea of increasing athletic performance on high tech equipment like a hockey treadmill and synthetic ice, "It's a big plus,” said Coyle.
The more than $3 million dollar state of the art facility also has a basketball court, a batting cage and turf for golf. Not to mention weight training equipment with an elite training system.
"The Screen is actually giving three different forms of feedback. One is the velocity of the bar, the other is his percent of effort compared to the previous repetition,” said Wes Emmert, Sports and Athletic Performance Manager.
The instant feedback ensures athletes can correct their technique before it's a habit that can lead to injury. Doctors and trainers work together to prevent those injuries and provide rehabilitation.
"The bottom line is to reduce risk of injury while enhancing their performance as far as their agility, the ability to move from point A to point B," said Emmert.
"We have a controlled environment here where we can watch you and ensure that you can transition back to your sport in a safe manner,” said Matt Thomas, Sports Medicine Physician.
Of course, there's hopes that with this new facility, comes a new field of athletic performance in our area, "More competitive, stronger, able to compete against other teams around the state,” said Coyle.
The new facility officially opens on Monday. It's for ages of athletes at any level. They also offer programs like sports nutrition and group fitness.
