(ABC 6 News) -- As we say goodbye to 2013 many of us will look back on our year. It may seem like it flew by, but much has happened. ABC 6 News reporter Katie Eldred took a look at the top stories of 2013.
It was a year where records were broken and we saw change and growth. The year of 2013 will be remembered for many different reasons.
The year started with a tragic accident in Iowa. The Mercy helicopter crash that killed three people.
Fourteen year old Noah Crooks was found guilty of shooting his mother to death near their home in Osage, Iowa.
Over the year people said goodbye to some old favorites. A & E in Austin closed and the Mower County Fairgrounds grandstand was burnt to the ground to make way for a new one.
But there were plenty of new places to discover as well, including the opening of the I.J. Holton Intermediate School.
2013 was a historic year in the legislature. Gay marriage was signed into law and legislation was passed to help fund the state's portion DMC. The multi-billion dollar private investment that will turn Rochester into a destination medical center.
Mother nature made for some memorable moments in as well. Who could forget the May, 2nd snowfall that caused us to simply laugh at the fact that we live here. Then there was the June flooding in Albert Lea, Iowa, and Fillmore County that was no laughing matter.
2013 also brought us the first federal government shutdown in 17 years.
That shutdown had something to do with the Affordable Care Act, which lead us to MNsure, The online health care site and the rollout many say wasn't ready.
In 2013 we saw local people breaking world records. Like captain Jim Brickson of the Albert Lea Salvation Army who set the red kettle bell ringing record at 105 hours.
We saw teams work together to reach new goals. Like the Austin boys basketball team that nearly went undefeated.
