(ABC 6 News) -- This time of year we can expect the flu virus and colds to get passed around, but this year we're seeing something else.

Doctors say a form gastroenteritis has been passing around.  It comes on quick, with vomiting and diarrhea and fever, but it typically doesn't last longer than a day or two.  The medical researcher we spoke with says its unclear what type of virus is causing this.

"This is unusual, there's a lot more this this year than we usually see, especially over the holidays, we don't usually see this," Dr. Barbara Yawn at Olmsted Medical Center said.  "this is more of a summer or fall kind of illness."

But similar to the common cold the best way to prevent it is by washing hands, and if you do come down with it, drink lots of fluids.
