(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A Rochester man is in custody after police find him in possession of a gun connected to a drive by shooting.

According to the Rochester Police Department Demontereous Jackson was arrested Friday afternoon after a traffic stop and a short foot pursuit.

An officer attempted a traffic stop on Jackson’s car near the 100 block of 12th St. S.E. just before six o’clock. Knowing that Jackson may have a gun on him and smelling marijuana, the officer asked Jackson to get out of the vehicle and searched him.

During a pat down a gun was felt in his pocket. At that time Jackson fled the officer running through the neighborhood. He was eventually arrested several blocks away.

Police located the weapon on the roof of a home near there. The fire department assisted with retrieving the gun from the roof.

The handgun is linked to a drive by shooting that happened a week ago.

Jackson is facing several charges including fleeing an officer and being in possession of a firearm without a permit.
