(ABC 6 News) -- Meals on Wheels is an vital program for those who rely on it. One local couple has spent their retirement years providing those meals each week. We spent the day the Heins' today as they delivered meals to Rochester residents for the last time.
For Doris Heins and her husband Kendall, delivering Meals on Wheels to Rochester residents has been their weekly routine since they retired.
"November 1982," said Kendall Heins. for more than 30 years, the Heins' have made meals on wheels a team effort, "I hate to tell you this, but I’m the oldest person that ever did this for family service,” he said.
They’re both hitting their mid-90's, "We've probably delivered every route one time or another,” said Doris Heins. Two days a week, Kendall makes sure the meals get to the right home, and Doris greets the residents at the door.
"How many meals they've delivered, how many people they have served, it's really astounding and something that we really want to solute,” said Brenda Walker with Family Service Rochester.
After delivering nearly 20,000 meals over the years. Friday their time serving residents in need came to an end.
"I think we're going to miss it, but I think it's high time we're off the road,” said Doris.
The couple says it's the gratitude of the people they serve that has kept them going all these years. There's no doubt, it's volunteers like the Heins' that make the program possible.
