(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It’s in keeping with the spirit of the holidays:
The Mower County United Way supports more than 55 programs that benefit thousands of people.
On Thursday, the United Way got some big help in meeting the challenge of funding those programs.
"We are accepting a very large check from the employees of the Hormel Corporate Office," United Way director Mandi Lighthizer Schmidt told us.
It pushes the United Way to about 71% of its $1.1 million dollar goal.
“We're seeing some campaigns that are down significantly, so a campaign of this size being up over $7,500 dollars is amazing and really needed," said United Way director Mandi Lighthizer Schmidt.
The Hormel corporate office campaign is the single largest employee campaign for the Mower County United Way.
"We have the corporate philosophy to give back to our communities," said Hormel’s Jennifer Moriarty.
And that includes employees -- on the day before thanksgiving, Hormel distributed a record $17 million dollars to employees as part of the 75th annual profit sharing program. This week, the company announced that it would give extra bonuses to nearly 20,000 employees company-wide -- $300 dollars for full-time employees, $150 dollars for part-timers.
It's a "thank you" for another year of record sales and profits.
"By having year-over-year success and seeing that some of our peer companies maybe haven't had that success, people see that and they're willing to give back for it," Hormel’s Jennifer Moriarty said.
And ultimately, the winners include the United Way and the people it serves.
“Need is ever increasing,” said the United ay’s Mandi Lighthizer Schmidt. “We all work together then. we're interconnected to solve community issues."
