(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Two weeks ago, the Winona Diocese was ordered to release the names of priests credibly accused of sexual abuse. It's a day many victims have been fighting years for.
Thomas Adamson, Joseph Cashman, Jack Krough, Leland Smith, and Leo Koppala. Five men that are still living and that are on the list of priests that have been credibly accused of sexual abuse.
"Almost half the parishes in the Diocese of Winona had a perpetrator at their parish," said Attorney Michael Finnegan.
The 14 priests served at dozens of churches in southeast Minnesota from Winona to Owatonna and Fairmont.
"Often survivors are suffering in silence and shame and this list gives those survivors permission to come forward and get help," said Finnegan.
Attorney's with Jeff Anderson and Associates have been working to have these names released for years. They say it will prevent further abuse and help the victims heal.
"These are grossly under reported and so this represents a fraction of the actual number of people that abused here in the diocese," said Finnegan.
The job doesn't end with this list. They want the release of additional documents from the church that show more of their involvement.
"We still have a long way to go for transparency for truth, there are more names that we need to know," said former priest Patrick Wall.
None of the priests on the list are still working in the church. The most recently accused Leo Koppala was placed on leave this summer. He's the only person facing criminal charges.
The remaining four are still alive, one even currently resides in Rochester.
"I hope that there's a day when we don't have to use the courts, when they voluntary release information like this, but I'm confident were not there yet and that we have a long way to go," said Finnegan.
