(ABC 6 News) -- Lots of movie goers in Rochester were rewarded for helping a good cause Saturday. Movie goers had the chance to see a movie for free this afternoon at the Galaxy 14 theater in Rochester. It's all part of one of the area's most popular food drives of the year, the cans film festival. Where just five canned food items is your ticket into the movie of your choice.
"We brought in 20, and it was just a really good opportunity to teach them that we can do something fun for ourselves while giving back to the community,” said Sam Hughes, who donated to take her family to a movie.
All the donations are going the salvation army and the channel one food bank in Rochester.
"We love to have people in here, love donating it's such a great event for us, we love seeing the whole Rochester community come in," said Kevin Pyfferoen, Associate Manager at Galaxy 14 Cine.
The event gives the Salvation Army an extra boost during a month where donations can be hard to come by. For families like Sam Hughes’, "It's a really easy way to spend some time together and teach them some values on how to help others,” said Hughes.
A record breaking 13,000 cans of food were donated at today's event.
