Mower County Health and Human Services Gets New Home
(ABC 6 News) -- There's a new place you need to go if you're looking for services from Mower County Health and Human Services. The department moved from Oak Park Mall to the second floor of the old county courthouse in Austin. About half the courthouse was left empty when the county built its new Justice Center. The department provides many services including public assistance, flu vaccines, and a health care clinic.
"We've been leasing over 20,000 square feet out at the mall," Mower County Coordinator Craig Oscarson said. "So rather than continue to lease and leave part of this building vacant and heat and cool it, it made a lot of sense as long as we didn't have to raise the tax levy."
The county used a "reserve" to pay the $4.3 million dollar cost of the project. The law enforcement facilities at the old courthouse were also remodeled.
