Priest Delivers Smiles in Rochester
(ABC 6 News) -- Some people in Rochester got to see Halloween costumes a day early.
The hustle and bustle of downtown Rochester was interrupted today for a few minutes by a rock and roll star and a troll.
That man is Father Nick Mezacapa, the priest at Calvary Episcopal Church in downtown Rochester. But about once a month he takes to the street corner with one goal in mind.
"Just fun, just fun and try to make them smile and make it through another Wednesday," Father Mezacapa said.
Handing out candy, dressing up -- all for a few smiles.
"Nothing religious, just have a good time, make them smile and give them a boost on theirw way to work, " church member Jan Larson said.
It's a change of scenery from inside the church, where Father Mezacapa has spent his Sundays for several years.
"27 years, not in this costume," Father Mezacapa joked. "I have other clothes I wear for church, if you like."
And for the past 10 of those years, he and his church members have been hitting the streets, doing things like this.
And now, they're hoping to continue the tradition into the future.
"I would say this is right up his alley," Larson said. "He's very good at making a connection with people."
"It's about greeting people, being present to this unique corner that we sit on and trying to just do a little good and remind people that being a person of faith doesn't have to be stodgy," Father Mezacapa said.
