App for Trick-or-Treating Sends Parents Warnings
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Thousands of kids will be on the streets Thursday night, Trick-or-Treating. And a single smartphone app can help keep your children out of a world of danger.
There are all kinds of these apps you can find. Some are free, some are paid for. I found one for my Android called Sex Offender Search. It not only shows you where sex offenders are in the area, it also shows you houses where other types of crimes occurred.
Four-year-old Akol is planning on being a ninja for halloween, and his mom, Christina, is taking him Trick-or-Treating.
"We usually go up and down the neighborhood. It's a pretty good area to go trick or treating."
But when we "checked in" to her neighborhood on the sex offender app, we found cases of drugs, assault, and theft, all within a few blocks from her house.
The app also give you the option to add people to your circle, like friends, family, and neighbors, and if something goes wrong, you can send them a panic alert, and then call 911; all things that are reassuring to Christina.
"If it's an app, everybody has a phone, it's available for everyone to use and you can find out how safe it is in your area, or not so safe as you may think," said Christina.
One one random street I checked into, 16th St SE, I found everything from harassment, to theft, and assault, and a sex offender who lives right down the road.
