Skip the Sweets, Some Kids Want Canned Foods
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The countdown has begun.
It won't be long before trick-or-treaters start making their rounds.
But when you stock-up for the youngsters who'll be ringing your doorbell, don't just stock up on sweets.
"They will be going door to door, asking for food donations that will be given to the Salvation Army," said Ashley Corbett at Austin’s St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
On the night before Halloween, about 75 middle and high school aged kids from Austin’s St. Olaf Lutheran church will be going door to door, hoping to make life better for someone else.
“There's so many people in this community that need food, so it gives our kids an opportunity to share their time for a good cause, and have a real good feeling when it's all over," said Dave Lillemon, whose 11-year-old daughter will be one of those trick-or-treating for food with the St. Olaf group.
“The more we can learn to volunteer our services, we're not only going to be a better person, but we're just going to make our community a whole lot better," Lillemon said.
“It's not specific to a single group or age, it's just a mixture of the community coming in," said Lisa Flores at the Austin Salvation Army. The food shelf at the Army in Austin is now serving between 300 and 350 families a month; that’s about twice as many as two years ago.
“Some of them have no jobs, some are homeless, some of them have part-time jobs and come here for that rescue," Lisa Flores explained.
“We're very blessed, so it's important that they understand that there are many people who do not have the resources and are counting on the Salvation Army to provide them food," Dave Lillemon said.
And when kids catch the spirit of volunteering and giving back ...
"Hopefully that will carry over as they become an adult," Dave Lillemon said.
“Primarily it's putting their faith into action," St. Olaf’s Ashley Corbett added.
The St. Olaf kids will be collecting food Wednesday night.
Students from the National Honor Society and youth leadership group at Austin high school will be trick-or-treating for food for the Salvation Army on *Thursday* night.
