Family of Austin Man Killed by Police Looking for Answers
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Minnetonka police have not released any new details in the death of Austin native Michael Tray, leaving friends and family with many unanswered questions.
Police responded to the Claremont Apartments in Minnetonka around 8:30 on Wednesday night after receiving reports of man with a gun sitting outside the complex.
Police say they found Tray, 27, with a gun, and confronted him in an underground parking garage.
What happened next is unclear, but police say several shots were fired, killing Tray.
Tray was at the apartment visiting his girlfriend, and his family says the gun belonged to his late father, and he only had it because he didn't want it stolen from his father's house which he had been readying for sale.
Tray's family told us they have no idea how this could have happened, saying Tray wouldn’t hurt a fly and certainly would have put the weapon down if the police had told him to.
“I’m still trying to wrap my head around sort of what's happened,” said Kris Fadness, Tray’s high school basketball coach. “This doesn't sound like the mike that I know."
Fadness and Tray remained close friends after Tray graduated, meeting regularly to talk about everything that was going on in their lives.
Fadness said he will remember his friend as a warm and caring person.
“He was a generous person, he was a compassionate person, very outgoing, and he had the gift to make people laugh,” Fadness said. “I'm going to miss him."
