Fillmore County Authorities Make Burglary Arrest
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A burglary investigation leads to a search warrant arrest in Fillmore County. A man suspected of several burglaries in the Fillmore County area is now in jail. A bunch of law enforcement officers targeted a rural Spring Valley home last night.
"I didn't know anything was going on, so I just figured that somebody must have been doing something over there,” said Iola Thompson of Spring Valley.
Iola Thompson lives about a half mile down the road from a scene that looked like this last night. A task force executed a search warrant -- finding stolen property, small amounts of meth and guns and evidence of a meth lab -- at the Spring Valley home.
52-year-old Mark Burrington was arrested for drug possession.
For Iola, to hear the news of her neighbors of almost twenty years, "It was shocking, because I haven't really had anything to do with them, so didn't know anything about it,” said Thompson.
The search last night came after an arrest earlier in the day. 32-year-old Michael Niemeyer of Rochester admitted to committing several burglaries in Fillmore and Mower counties.
"We've never considered break-ins as an issue before and obviously you'd like to think in our society that churches still would be kind of be about that type of thought,” said Joe Haynes, Pastor at First Baptist Church in Spring Valley.
A rash of break- ins that last Thursday included First Baptist Church in Spring Valley.
"When people are desperate, they do desperate things, but praise god he's still in control and no one was hurt and the man was apprehended,” said Haynes.
A safe and some electronics were stolen from the church. These items along with much more from other businesses were found by Fillmore County authorities.
For Iola Thompson, knowing the suspects are in custody is a relief.
"I feel much safer,” said Thompson.
Officials with the Fillmore County Sheriff's Department tell me Niemeyer is being held in the Mower County jail on separate drug charges and of course if he's released he will be brought to the Fillmore County Jail.
