How Early is Too Early for Black Friday Shopping?
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- For the first time in the 155 year history of Macy’s, Black Friday will begin on a Thursday. The store will open on 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
“I think it’s a shame that Macy’s has made that decision,” said Helen Restovich, a teacher at Lourdes High School in Rochester.
“I feel really strongly about families being together and having their meal together and being thankful for what they have, and I think it’s a poor idea for everybody to be shopping,” said Restovich.
She wasn’t the only one opposed to the early opening.
“I think it’s greedy,” said Brian Luke.
The response wasn’t all negative however. There were those who liked the idea for shoppers and the retail workers.
“With the economy how bad it is, I would think that anybody would be extremely happy to get either overtime or time and a half for working the holiday,” said Trudy Grill.
“By 8 o’clock all the dishes are done. We’re ready to go shopping,” said Grill.
“We want to be consistent with the other retailers,” said Macy’s manager Eric Ofori-Atta.
He said over 50% of his employees volunteered to work Thanksgiving night.
