Summer of Service Winner Madi Wuertz
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- This year ABC 6 has teamed up with Youth Service America, looking for young kids who are making a difference throughout communities.
The three winners of the Summer of Service awards have been chosen, and today we meet Madi Wuertz.
"I think it's really important for young people to be involved with things in the community," Wuertz told us.
Wuertz was a freshman the first time the youth leadership club at Austin high school took strides for a cure. It was the cause that made people turn out despite the rainy weather.
"It was really interesting, how people decided to rally together for breast cancer," Wuertz said.
The 5k walk/run event raises money for breast cancer research at the Hormel Institute.
Today Madi Wuertz is a senior and the president of the youth leadership club.
"Now that we've been doing it for a couple years, the numbers have grown even more," Wuertz said.
The club has donated $7,500 to the Hormel Institute as a result of the three strides event.
Madi is our third featured winner.
