(ABC 6 News) - 18 months of hard work is coming to fruition. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday at the Channel One Food Bank in Rochester. The building is set to expand by 22,000 square feet.
“One of the key pieces that we use of course is our building. This is where we bring the food in, where we distribute all of our food, where we get it ready for distribution, and unfortunately this key tool wasn’t meeting our needs anymore,” said Jennifer Woodford, the executive director at Channel One.
“We see that our service will need to increase, therefore our space needs to increase,” said Edward Stites, operations director at Channel One.
Channel One distributed nearly 9 million lbs. of food last year, serving approximately 100,000 people. The total is growing every year.
“Space is at a premium in the warehouse. We’ve got things stacked at the ends of the aisles, forklift traffic with volunteers and staff is tight,” said Stites.
Funding for the project is being provided by Sterling State Bank.
“We just wanted to put our bid in there and see if we could help them out, and get this project going for them,” said Jerad Faudi from the bank.
“Having a larger facility will enable us to meet that growing need and continue to feed people who struggle with hunger every day,” said Woodford.
The project is projected to take 5-6 months to complete.
