Mayo Clinic Celebrating 150 Years
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's a world-famous medical center, the home of two hospitals, and the future heart of the Destination Medical Center.
But there is a rich history behind the Mayo Clinic. Wednesday, dozens of people came together to learn more about it. In particular, the history of the hospitals; Methodist, and St. Marys.
"St. Marys begins its 125th anniversary, and Methodist Hospital, its 60th. We thought it would be wonderful to showcase the history of the two hospitals and how they were such a vital part of the growth of the city of Rochester.
St. Marys was started back in 1883, after a tornado tore through Rochester.
"There had to be a better way to respond to emergencies," said Sister Cashel.
There was also a nursing school that began in 1906. The first graduating class had only two students.
"Many Rochester nurses volunteered for duty. And replacements were difficult to find. The clinic was growing and the need for hospital and clinical nurses grew with it," said Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede.
The hospital also played a role in the first world war.
"It was a time of hard work, and shortages of supplies and equipment for the war effort," said Brede.
All of that history, and more, plays in to what the hospitals are today, and what they will be in the future.
"They've been a vital part of the history of the city. As we move forward with the destination medical city, they continue to be that now as we become one licensed hospital on January 1st, 2014." said Sister Trueman.
