Winona Teen Charged with Bringing Loaded Gun to School
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Caught with a loaded gun at school, a student is facing serious charges in Winona County.
He's a Winona Senior High School student who is now in juvenile custody after bringing a hand gun into the school according to police.
A scary situation at Winona senior High. A 15 year old boy brought a loaded .22 pistol to school last week. Police became aware of the gun when a girl reported seeing it in his pocket of high school grounds.
"As soon as the knowledge that someone was bringing a gun to school had come to their attention they jumped on it right away they got the school liaison involved and they called the police and did an investigation as quickly as they could,” said Winona School District Superintendent Scott Hannon.
The school liaison officer talked with many students and learned this isn't the first time the gun had been on school grounds. They say the boy had been bringing the loaded fun to school for several weeks as far back as last spring. The boy was arrested on Monday with felony charges of 2nd degree assault, possession of a dangerous weapon on school property and making terrorist threats according to the Winona Daily News.
"I’m relieved that the boy is in custody and we won't have that kind of threat out there but on the other hand I'm disappointed that we had some people that knew about this that didn't come forward didn't let us know didn't let the police know, that's bothersome," said Hannon.
In one instance there's reports of the boy putting the loaded gun to the head of another student. The superintendent says that students were friends and they said they were just joking around so that's why it wasn't reported. Police are still investigating how the boy came in possession of the gun.
