Police: Lookout For FAKE RPU Bill Collectors
(ABC 6 News) - Rochester police are warning Rochester Public Utility customers to be on lookout for scam artists, after a local business was tricked out of $1,000.
Authorities say a Rochester restaurant received a call last week from a fake RPU worker claiming its electricity bill was $1,000 dollars overdue. The person on the phone said the bill needed to be paid in full within the next few hours or the electricity would be turned off.
The caller told the manager to pay the bill by buying pay pack cards at Walgreens and then to give them the number over the phone. The manager followed the instructions and made the payment over the phone before realizing it was a scam.
Police declined to to identify the restaurant.
But they say this is not the first time they've heard of the scam involving fake RPU bill collectors. They warn everyone to be wary of similar phone calls.
