Furloughs Not Likely for Rochester's Federal Medical Center
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- With the federal government shutdown going into effect, many essential services will continue operating without any disruption. One such facility that is unlikely to have any change is the Federal Medical Center in Rochester.
The facility is one of six medical prisons under the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Of its 36,100 employees nationwide, 99% or 35,741 will remain on the job. That's due to an exception in law that states any role that 'involves the protection of human life and property' cannot be furloughed during a lapse of appropriations.
ABC 6 News talked with a Federal Medical Center spokesperson who said they could not comment on whether anyone locally was facing furlough. Our research indicates it's unlikely.
