Concern Over Violent Video Games Grows with GTA 5
“I think parents should be strongly cautioned,” said Grady Rider, Manager of Family Video in Rochester.
Grand Theft Auto V is in stores and selling faster than any game in history. It’s extremely violent however, which leaves some fearful of the effects.
“I’ve had a couple kids trying to rent it, and usually I don’t care what they rent… Call of Duty,
anything like that, but there’s no way I’d let younger kids rent this at all,” said Rider.
“We noticed that they have more violent thoughts as well as more aggressive behaviors, and they have decreased empathy towards others and fewer caring behaviors,” said Cindy HarbeckWeber, a child psychologist at Mayo Clinic.
The game is yet another example of the ongoing culture of violence in America. Gun, violence, mental illness all feared.
“We don’t know that we can necessarily make the link between violent video games and say, a future act of violence,” said Harbeck-Weber.
The game itself has become even more violent and graphic, with nudity, vulgar language, shootings, stealing, even torture.
“Even if they’ve played some of the previous Grand Theft Auto’s, this one’s a lot more mature,” said Rider.
