Walmart Employees Volunteering for Local Non-Profits
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A dollar to give, to those a dollar short.
“If you’re hungry, if affects so many other different aspects of our lives,” said Diane Johnson, a Wal-Mart employee and volunteer.
Wal-Mart is part of many charity organizations.
“I’m glad Wal-Mart gives us the opportunity to do it,” said Johnson.
Wal-Mart also provides grants of $250 for every 25 hours of service completed. The grants go to the organizations in which the employees volunteer.
“Every week we’re doing something to give back,” said Front End Manager Tammy Defrang.
Defrang is also part of the Wal-Mart gives back committee.
“I do it because I like involving myself with people,” said Defrang.
The committee works with organizations like Channel One Food Bank.
“They have demonstrated, starting at the corporate level, a real dedication to the fight against hunger, and they have done that nationally and certainly they have done that locally,” said Jennifer Woodford from Channel One.
Tony Talbot has been manager at Wal-Mart North in Rochester for 8 years. Last year over 35 percent of his employees became volunteers.
“We find out what’s personal to them (employees),” said Talbot.
“As a co-worker, it makes you feel good that they care about what you care about,” said Johnson.
