Many Uncertain About Return to Winona Apartments
“I don’t know if, or when, I can move back in,” said Chelsea Knox.
Knox lived in the apartments above Blooming Grounds Coffee Shop in downtown Winona that suffered extensive damage due to the fire on Friday morning.
The fire blazed for over 4 hours and destroyed 3 buildings.
“My status is kinda up in the air right now,” said Knox.
Knox, a Winona State University student, is currently living with a friend of hers, and she considers herself lucky to be alive, and have the choice of returning to her damaged apartment.
“I know for sure there are people that can’t go back,” said Knox.
Police say they still have no leads as to what started the fire. It is reported to have started in the Islamic Center on E 3rd Street.
“Still at this point, nothing indicates foul play. They’re still focusing on an area toward the back of the Islamic Center as the possible start where the fire originated from,” said Winona Police Chief, Paul Bostrack.
The fire forced evacuation of the entire block. Nobody was injured. For some, there was a silver lining to everything.
“It ended up being a weird bonding experience… The community’s really reached out,” said Knox.
