LANESBORO, MN (AP) - A 94-year-old veteran from southeastern Minnesota plans to return a sword he took from Nagasaki, Japan, as a token of his time during World War II.

Orval Amdahl of rural Lanesboro says at first, he kept the sword as a souvenir. But then he began thinking "someone had to own this."

Amdahl mentioned the sword to an author who asked to interview him for a book about the dropping of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Post-Bulletin reports the author used her contacts to find the grandson of the Japanese military officer who once owned the sword.

Amdahl will hand the sword to the grandson during a ceremony Sept. 21 at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul. St. Paul is a sister city to Nagasaki.
