Lewiston's Only Nursing Home to Close
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The only nursing home in Lewiston is closing, and locals say it's a big blow to the whole community.
From the elderly residents living there, to those who take care of them, roughly 100 people are going to have to look elsewhere after the "Lewiston Villa" shuts down. We're told that will happen in the next couple months
Those at the front desk, even the manager, didn't want to say much other than the rumors are true. The only nursing home in town will be shutting its doors. "I thought it was terrible. It's awful that they would close it down," said Lewiston resident Barbara Nisvit. She is very familiar with the Lewiston Villa nursing home, from visiting friends to volunteering, she says she's there a couple times a week. "It’s been there for so many years and I've had family up there staying there and I've got friends up there," she said.
Nisvit says she'll miss the place, but not nearly as much as those living there. "We just need it because there's just no other place around that people are happy. A lot of them come to Lewiston," she said.
Nearly 40 residents will soon have to find a new nursing home in a different community. "They are deeply depressed that they've got to try and find someplace else and, like I said, there's hardly any place around,” said Nisvit. Those that work there will have to move on too. "Sixty five people employed, that's a lot of people to take jobs away from," said Nisvit.
We're told the home has already began helping to relocate residents, but it still means they won’t be just down the road from friends like Nisvit anymore. "I know a lot of people up there, and like I said, I don't know where they're going to go," she said.
We're told by Lewiston residents that the owners, who are based out of the twin cities area, are getting older and their heath isn't in a place where they can continue to run the place. We left their spokesperson messages but they didn't get back to us Monday.
