Roller derby returns to Austin
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- "I'm not really sure why, but it's making a strong comeback," Christine Stiehm said.
A group of area women have put together a roller derby team and are planning to form a league within the next year.
But it takes some skill and a lot of practice to be a part of that team.
"We meet minimum requirements and that's what we work on during practices," Stiehm said. "Each girl has to meet these requirements to be a part of the association."
The requirements include skating around the track in a certain amount of time, skating on one leg, jumping over something, and getting up with no hands.
But believe it or not, some of these girls haven't skated in years.
"Some people are a little leery. 'I haven't been on skates in ten years', we hear it out of many, many girls," Stiehm said. "And we say, just come out and skate. Just come out and go around a few times. Practically every single person that just gets their skates on and tries it ends up doing much better than they expected".
The group is holding a fundraiser at the Blooming Prairie Servicemen's Club this Saturday from 4:30-9:30 p.m.
