The Macker Returning to Rochester Saturday

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Hundreds of people will be filling Rochester this weekend as the Gus Macker basketball tournament returns to Minnesota for the first time since 2006.

"We're really happy to be back in Minnesota," VP of Operations Mike Fuller said preparing for the event.

The world's largest 3 on 3, double elimination basketball tournament is a “family-oriented event,” according to Fuller.

It's the 40th anniversary of a tournament that began when Scott McNeal (alias Gus Macker) a young Lowell, Michigan man gathered 17 friends in his parent’s driveway to play for $18.

The tournament has raised about $15 million since 1987 for local communities. This year’s funds will go to the Rochester Y.

"Hopefully more of the community will get involved, and eventually we'll have a majority of the town here helping out, either playing of helping out," said volunteer Ryne Smith.

Any age group or gender can play for the Macker trophy, and for a good cause.
