Memorial Added to Murder Site in Northwood

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A day after a fatal stabbing shook the small community of Northwood, Iowa, police have identified the victim.

Police say 30-year-old Justina Smith of Northwood died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

A new report from the Iowa Department of Public Safety says Smith called 9-1-1 herself after she was stabbed.

When police arrived they found Smith with severe injuries, and although she was transported to Mercy Hospital North Iowa, she ultimately died from her injuries.

An autopsy confirmed she was stabbed to death, but the medical examiner would not comment on what type of weapon was used.

Smith was the mother of two young children and she worked not far from her home at the Casey's gas station in Northwood.

Friends tell us Smith was a very happy person and on Tuesday the community mourned her by placing flowers in the park where she was attacked.

The suspect in this case, 39-year-old Tyrone Washington, is now charged with first degree murder in connection with Smith's death.

Police say Washington stole Smith's car and led police on a high speed chase that ended in a cornfield 220 miles away near Davenport, Iowa.

Washington is being held in the Scott County jail on a $500,00 cash only bond.
