Local Students Heading to National Science Olympiad Competition
(ABC 6 News) -- 15 lucky students have won the chance to represent Minnesota at the National Science Olympiad Competition.
Exciting news for the Rochester School District, but even more so for Rhea Kohli from Friedell Middle School, one of the lucky participants going to nationals.
"Just the whole idea of going to nationals for something is really exciting for me," she says.
She and 14 others will be heading out to the National Science Olympiad Competition in Ohio after taking first place at the Minnesota Science Olympiad Competition earlier this month.
This will be the first time Friedell Middle School will be heading to the national competition. Friedell Middle School is in the top two percent of all middle school Science Olympiad members nation-wide.
They will work in teams of two to solve science problems. Each year a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering, and technology.
The students say they are currently training with science teachers, retired IBM engineers and other volunteers from the community as they prepare for the big competition.
The competition is on May 17, and the students are currently trying to raise $10,000 to go on this trip.
