Lawmakers Propose Suicide Prevention Text Line
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The number of people taking their own lives by suicide is rising in Minnesota, and now some lawmakers are proposing a statewide text line they think could help bring the numbers down.
A House committee discussed the bill today. It is still unclear how much money would be needed to fund it.
According to the Department of Health, the number of suicides has consistently gone up in Minnesota. In 2005, 542 people took their own lives. And by 2010 the number had grown to nearly 600. 2009 was the only year the numbers dipped, but still 581 people died by suicide that year.
Carlton County in Northern Minnesota already has its own suicide text prevention line. Officials there say they're contacted now via text more in one day than they had been contacted by all other ways combined in an entire month.
