Area Student Going to Presidential Inauguration
(ABC 6 News) -- The Presidential Inauguration is one week from Monday and we've learned a Rochester native has been invited to be there.
Michael Hicks is a senior at Winona State University and a hardworking student at that. "I'm a member of an honor society called Golden Key International," said Michael.
That's how he got the email invitation. "I'm going to say yes to this obviously," he said. That was his first reaction when he'd been asked to attend President Obama's Inauguration. A historical event he never thought he'd see in person. "No, not in a million years," he laughed.
"I was just extremely excited," said his mother Peggy Leino. She's thrilled for her son. She says he worked hard for this opportunity. "When he got to college he's really come into his own and I’m so proud of him," said Leino.
In just 4 days, Michael will be on a plane to Washington D.C. He says he has no idea what to expect. "We have an itinerary. We have our schedule, but there's a difference between seeing it on paper and seeing it for real," said Michael.
"I just want him to enjoy every minute," said his mother. Especially, watching the president swear in for a second term. "He's always on the TV, you know? You never expect to see him in person," said Michael.
Michael isn't the only one from our area taking part in the inauguration. Sergeant Brian Mannhas from Waseca will march with the US Air Force band and Honor Guard during the event and the National Guard 1133rd, who have members from Mason City, will also be part of the president's big day.
