Minnesota DPS Commissioner Announces Safety Grants While In Rochester

(ABC 6 News) - The Commissioner of Minnesota's Department of Public Safety was in Rochester Wednesday morning. Commissioner Mona Dohman announced new federal grants of just over $500,000 which are being provided to southeastern law enforcement agencies and community groups.

The money will be used for traffic safety enforcement and education efforts that run through the end of September of next year. The funds support campaigns to improve seat belt use, prevent drunk driving, encourage driving at safe speeds and for motorists to pay attention behind the wheel.

Officials say these efforts - coupled with important legislation, safer vehicles and roads, and swift, efficient trauma response - have been the primary factors for a 44 percent reduction in state traffic deaths from a decade ago.
