Dzubay 'embarrassed, honored' by 800th win

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- After 31 years of coaching high school volleyball at the varsity level, John Dzubay continues to teach.

He has spent the last 26 years at Stewartville, winning three state titles and too many section championships to count.

Last Saturday, he added win number 800.

"I'm kind of embarrassed.  I mean, it's an honor, obviously," Dzubay said.

The Tigers beat Eastview over the weekend, and Dzubay became just the third coach in Minnesota history to reach 800 wins.

"It was a sloppy win, and I was just mad," Dzubay said. "And then they came over and were screaming, and I was like, 'What in the world?'  And they said, '800,' and I thought, 'Oh, I forgot.'"

"We were really excited," Stewartville senior Liz Waugh said. "We all played really hard for him, so we wanted to make sure he knew we were proud of him."

Dzubay knows that without players like Waugh, 800 doesn't happen.

"One of the moms sent out Facebook stuff to all of my past players, over all these years. And they sent in some quotes and things that they remembered, and I can't read it without crying every time," Dzubay said.
