Brothers in Custody for Breaking into Cars
(ABC 6 News)- It was a mix of luck and good police work that lead officers to an arrest Thursday afternoon.
Rochester police were called to the intersection of Silver Creek Road and County Road 22 for a report of a vehicle break-in. Officers say that area is commonly used by hunters for parking their vehicles.
The victim came back to his truck and noticed several hundred dollars in hunting equipment was stolen. Moments later officers were then called to the RCTC parking lot for another break-in.
That's when one officer decided to stop by Quarry Hill Nature Center on a hunch. He checked their surveillance video and saw a man get out of a blue Ford Explorer and try to break into a parked car.
Police used that vehicle description to arrest Erik and Santos Vargas for felony theft.
Officers found the brothers in the 300 block of 7th Avenue Northwest. Officers recovered several stolen items and returned them to their owners.
Both men have been charged for numerous crimes including possession of stolen property, tampering with a motor vehicle, and 5th degree controlled substance.
Police believe the two brothers were also responsible for several other break-ins that occurred over the last few months.
