Two Charged with Multiple Drug Felonies in Rochester
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- An undercover investigation leads to the discovery of thousands of dollars in illegal drugs.
Law enforcement says the scale of the bust wasn't massive, but large enough to have a significant impact.
After searching the house on Zumbro Drive Northwest, they were able to find 2 oz. of cocaine, 5 oz. of meth and almost $8,000 in cash.
They also found scales and equipment for distribution.
Investigators have been working this case for several weeks.
They say it's likely the two suspects have been at it for quite some time.
"This was a several week investigation," says Sgt. Paul Wilson of the Narcotics Division.
On Friday, Wilson and his team made an undercover purchase of drugs at the corner of 14th Street and 4th Avenue Northwest.
The successful conclusion of an ongoing investigation into Abdirahman Abdullahi and Kamal Abukar.
"This is probably the two main drugs that we deal with the most is cocaine and methamphetamines," Wilson says.
The two men were significant players in the drug community.
Between the drugs and cash, narcotics officers seized well over $18,000.
Police say it’s a small fraction of what they had most likely sold in the past.
"A significant arrest. It's definitely some significant charges," says Wilson.
14 felony charges total between the two of them, 12 for selling a controlled substance. The other two for fleeing police.
Wilson says it's only the beginning. He and his team plan to use phone records and other pieces of evidence to keep the investigation alive.
"We try to move up the ladder. We try to go after the bigger fish and the people that are going to have the most impact on the community," Wilson says.
Part of what made this investigation so successful was the valuable help from neighbors who noticed that something just wasn't right in their neighborhood.
Some red flags for a drug house might include large amounts of traffic at all hours of the day.
As well as people coming and going and only staying a few minutes at a time.
