Small Town Fighting to Get Road Fixed

It's common knowledge in the small town of Peterson that the main road through town needs a little work. 

"There's a lady that when they go through town here there’s a big crack in the black top and her whole house shakes," said Don Boyum. 

That road is part of Fillmore County road 25. A road that workers have started to resurface, but the small stretch of that road that goes through Peterson will not be touched. 

Mayor Jennifer Wood has asked the county again and again to have this part of the road included in the project. 

"It gets worse every year and we want our town to look charming and well taken care of," said Wood. 

She doesn't understand why they would resurface the rest of the road and leave this portion out. 

"I'm just frustrated because it doesn't make sense when you've brought in all the equipment, to let them go home and then at a later date bring that equipment back," said Wood.

The county engineer did not want to go on camera, but told us the portion of 25 that runs through town was left out for several reason. He says for one they didn’t have the funding, that this portion was not on their top list of priorities, and the main reason he says was because the city would need to fix the sidewalk first.

But Mayor Wood says she told the county they would be willing to their part to get the job done.

"We've asked for a written list of what need to do, we have not gotten anything written saying you absolutely have to do this."

For many in the community it just doesn't make sense why they wouldn't finish what they started.

"The main thing is, when you're doing a project you do the whole thing," said Boyum.

The mayor was also concerned that the trucks going through town to fix the other part of the road, will only make the problem worse.
