October is Most Dangerous Month for Pedestrians

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - As the days become shorter and the nights grow longer, drivers have a harder time seeing pedestrians.

So the Minnesota Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers and pedestrians to watch out for each other.

October is the most dangerous month for pedestrians. Minnesota Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/QCE3jS ) that MnDOT officials are trying to get the word out. The campaign includes safety messages at busy intersections in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, St. Cloud and Rochester. It also includes billboards and ads on the radio and on buses.

Forty pedestrians were killed last year statewide while more than 800 were injured. So far this year, two dozen pedestrians have died.

Officials say pedestrian deaths and injuries have remained consistent in recent years, even though the number of fatal vehicle crashes has declined.
