Email to a FriendUSC Students Learn About Farm Safety
(ABC 6 News) -- It's the time of year when farmers are busy with harvest which makes now a perfect time to teach students an important lesson. Though it was a fun day for kids at United South Central Schools, they sure were good listeners. Those with FFA Farm Safety program showed these kids some demonstrations that'll be hard to forget.
"Got auger safety that's a big one, PTO safety, run over safety..." said FFA member Nicholas Krebsbach. Covering almost everything these kids need to know if they're out on the farm because those big toys, come with a long list of warnings.
''They've been very attentive. They really have been taking it serious. They've had good reactions when they see some of this stuff," said Krebsbach.
A message that wasn't hard to pick up on. Like when they watched a demonstration of a PTO ripping apart a straw stuffed doll. "Watching the people get chopped up," said 6th grader Blake Ledred.
Or the demonstration of a Lego person sinking in corn. A neat demonstration, but not so cool in real life. "You can fall through if you're not careful," said Krebsbach.
"I got sucked all the way up to my waist in corn and I could not move at all," said FFA member Dakota Kalis. He was caught in a pretty bad situation when he was 13. He says that's why it’s important to know what to do, at any age. "It was just a scary situation I was pretty young yet, and I just wasn't sure what to do," said Kalis.
Hopefully these kids will never be faced with a situation like that, but it sure doesn't hurt to take something home from Thursday's lesson. "It's very important. It's very good we have this here to let them know what to do," said Kalis.
No doubt, a lesson that'll stick. "Stay away from stuff and not to wear loose clothing," said Ledred.
"Really important because I just learned a whole bunch of stuff on how not to get hit, hurt, and killed," said 6th grader Ethan Bachelder.
Now taking it outside of the farm. There were also snowmobile demonstrations and lawn mower demonstrations. All to make sure nobody gets hurt.
