Austin Honors Those Who've Defended Our Country

(ABC 6 News) -- Since 9/11 attack, thousands of men and women have died defending our freedom. On Tuesday night, they were honored in Austin.

Firefighters rang this bell five times before a boisterous 21 gun salute. People gathered at the Mower County Veteran's Memorial around 6:00 P.M. for the ceremony.

Speakers included Austin mayor Tom Stiehm and dozens of other emergency service personnel.

"It blesses my heart because they have given their lives, their livelihood, and their future as well as their past to serving us and making our country safe," said Pamela Hollrah-Asleson an organizer of the event.

The ceremony also celebrated Austin becoming a "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon City."
