20-Year-Old Charged with Strangling Mother; Setting Body on Fire

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A 20-year-old man recently released from a mental institution is charged with strangling his mother and then setting her body on fire in St. Paul.

According to the complaint, Michael Caldwell went to the hospital for a psychological evaluation and confessed. He allegedly told police he argued with his mother, 49-year-old Lorine Johnson, about insurance money, strangled her and then used lighter fluid to set the fire early Thursday.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the victim's boyfriend said the pair flew to Missouri Wednesday to get Caldwell from a mental health facility against a doctor's advice.

The complaint says he was arrested there after being previously reported as a missing person when kicked off a bus that was to take him to a school in Oklahoma.
