Blooming Prairie Holds Cancer Auction

(ABC 6 News) -- On Friday and Saturday night, the Blooming Prairie Cancer Group is hosting a series of auctions and fun events to raise cancer awareness and money for research.
Galen Peterson has attended the cancer auction for all 12 years it's been around.
"I enjoy it. This is a fun night here," says Peterson. He’s not just one of the bid callers, he's also a prostate cancer survivor.
"It's kind of devastating when you figure it out you had a good life and you don't know how much more you're going to get through," says Peterson.
For him, this event offers more than just a bit of fun. It's a way to help those who haven't gone into remission.
"It's kind of a camaraderie thing, ya know? And, uh, we all pitch in and help each other," says Peterson.
"It's just fun to see all our community members come together," says organizer, Cheri Krejci. She became involved with the group after her dad died from cancer.
"Then my mom got cancer and she passed away. It'll be 4 years ago this month," says Krejci. Things continued to spiral even more a year later.
"I was diagnosed with breast cancer," says Krjeci. “It gives you a pretty much whole new perspective on life, ya know...Just- things that you would take for granted, um, you just don't take them for granted."
Fortunately for both Galen and Cheri, their cancer remains in remission. But because they've survived, they say they want to do whatever they can to help those who still struggle with the disease.
If you'd like to stop by and participate in the auction, you can catch Saturday’s event at 7 p.m. There's also bingo at 4:30 p.m. If you'd simply like to donate, call Cheri at (507) 438-6895.
