FLOODING DEFINITIONS

Flood Warning
A Flood Warning is issued to inform the public of flooding along rivers and streams in which there is a serious threat to life or property.

Flood Watch
A Flood Watch is issued to inform the public that current and developing conditions are such that there is a threat of flooding.

Flash Flood Warning
A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a rapid and extreme flow of high water into a normally dry area is expected or when expecting a rapid water level rise in a stream or creek above a predetermined flood level.

Flash Flood Watch
A Flash Flood Watch is issued to indicate current or developing hydrologic conditions that are favorable for flash flooding in and close to the watch area.

Areal Flood Warning
Areal Flood Warning are issued where minor flooding is expected to occur in areas with poor drainage or urban areas.

Areal Flood Watch
Areal Flood Watches are issued to indicate current or developing conditions are favorable to produce flooding in areas with poor drainage or urban areas.
