ABC 6 News was on site today when Ty Pennington and the design team from EMHE surprised the DeVries family from Albert Lea. The DeVries family’s home will be demolished and rebuilt in 7 days of round-the-clock construction. ABC 6 News will be there with live reports and continuous coverage, including exclusive aerial footage from the ABC News helicopter.
The DeVries family was chosen from thousands of applicants. Despite daunting limitations, the DeVries’ have transformed the lives of many others through ingenuity, music and mentorship. Their farmhouse is in such disrepair that it is on the verge of collapsing. In addition, health problems are a daily challenge. Mom, Susan suffers from Ventricular Tachycardia, which keeps her heart constantly beating above 100 beats per minute. Often feeling ill and fatigued, she still shines as a loving music teacher, band director, 1st grade reading specialist and bus driver for her school’s evening route. Husband Dirk, a mechanic, suffers from severe arthritis in his only hand, limiting his ability to make major home repairs.
Viewers can look forward to behind-the-scenes insights and profiles as the stories unfold with the design team, contractors and volunteers. ABC 6 News Director Mike Schram has the news team digging deep to tell the multitude of great stories that will come out of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition experience. “There has been an impressive surge of community support ever since the announcement was made that Freeborn County had been selected for a project. We anticipate a ripple effect that will keep on affecting the area long after Ty Pennington and his design team have moved on to help other deserving families. ABC 6 News will follow local stories as they develop. We are also proud to be one of many groups participating in fund raising efforts for the DeVries family home makeover.”
While Ty and the designers, local builder Larson Construction and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the DeVries family will go on vacation to Niagara Falls, Ontario - Canada (Hilton).
